The land around the Hanarry Swim and Racquet Club was developed during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Streets were mapped out and houses were built by Harry and Hanna Shaffer. Roads were named after their children and relatives. The name Hanarry is a combination of Harry’s and Hanna’s first name.

A Hanarry Estates Civic Club was formed around 1970. Members met in private homes and worked on community projects. Originally there were men’s and women’s groups within the civic club. The Hanarry Estates Civic Club is still in existence and active in the community around the pool and tennis courts.

In May, 1971, several men from the civic club were meeting in a private home and decided a larger community club was needed. Some of these men were: Charlie Trettel, Nick Kahle, Marty Grant, Lou Sadler, Larry Duke and Bob Boring. These men and others went door to door selling memberships. Early meetings were held at Camp Creek Elementary and later at Knight Elementary School. One hundred and sixty memberships had to be sold before construction could begin.

The original club consisted of the pool, two tennis courts, softball field, and the lower part of the present club house where the bathrooms are located, and a picnic area with playground equipment. The club house was built next at a cost of $37,658.00. Two additional tennis courts were constructed during 1976. Opening day for the Hanarry Swim and Racquet Club was Memorial weekend 1972. The first annual Memorial Day "Pig Pickin" was held in 1978. HSRC had a tennis ladder back as early as 1974 and had some of the first teams in the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association that started in the early 1970’s. The first swim team was organized by Art Smith and coached by Audrey Hardin during the summer of 1973.

Over the years, many people have worked long and hard to make the club what it is today. Some of these early members who worked so hard in addition to the ones listed above are: Glenn Smith, Mel Mitchell, Bob Hettesheimer, John Leatherman, Johnny DeArmon, Rick Fisher, John and Kathy McGill, Joe Adams, Jesse Hall, Dan and Ellen Kohnke, Kent Ortman, Dave Kopp, Peggy Trettel, Dick and Signe Haglund , and all the past swim teams coaches, swim team presidents and club presidents listed on the next pages. A couple of people who have made more recent contributions to the club are David Morse, long time tennis coordinator and Tom Weinthaler, long time treasurer. I know there are hundreds more names I could add. Please forgive me if your name does not appear on these pages.

This history is as accurate as I could make it based on interviews, researching old club directories, and looking through old club records. If something is not accurate please let me know and I will change it. If a name has been left out please let me know and I will add it. Our club today was made possible because a lot of good people volunteered their time and effort to build a better community.
